Jay Sharpe, a well-known Las Vegas sports bettor in the 1990's to early 2000's, has been doing what he does best - picking sporting event winners.

(firmenpresse) - Jay Sharpe, a well-known Las Vegas sports bettor in the 1990's to early 2000's, has been doing what he does best - picking sporting event winners. Only this time he's not just playing at local casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, he's advising for a sports betting investment firm that also shares their sports picks to subscribing clients globally. The success of this firm is putting pressure on many bookmakers to recalculate how they determine sports betting odds.

In 1992, a highly successful baseball card investor turned his sites on to handicapping sports. At the time sports memorabilia, particularly baseball cards, were a hot commodity. But to be a successful investor of the 2.5"x3.5" cards, one had to be very knowledgeable in sports and monitor many statistics. A sports handicapper is someone who researches and analyzes sporting events in an attempt to find betting value or determine winners. This sports handicappers name was Jay Sharpe. And according to most Las Vegas Bookmakers, he was the best sports handicapper of all time.

But Jay disappeared from the public eye in the early 2000's. With so much sports betting success, came more and more demand from novice and professional gamblers alike to learn the secrets of his success. It ended with two burglars that were caught trespassing on Mr Sharpe's property to steal his trash in an attempt to gather any possible clues to his sports analysis.

"It wasn't the first time we had to call the police," said Jay in a rare interview in 2004. "It was just the straw that broke the camels back. I had to move."

It wasn't the first time his privacy was intruded. In fact, all accounts indicate that Jay couldn't even step on the Vegas Strip without being recognized and harassed by tourists and local bettors alike.

"If Mr. Sharpe stepped inside the casino, we automatically heightened security," cited a former Caesars Palace pit boss who requested to remain anonymous. "Other bettors would often become aggressive, fighting through the crowd to get a look at his tickets. It was quite exciting for awhile. But after a couple of incidents where some minor injuries occurred to some innocent bystanders, it became a real nuisance."

But not all casino personnel perceived Jay Sharpe's presence as a nuisance. Some Vegas bookmakers used his wagers to adjust their lines. Several sportsbooks even agreed to share who Jay was betting on with each other, so that they could adjust their sports betting lines accordingly.

James Mood, a bookmaking consultant for MGM at the time broke it down for us. "When you have a sports handicapper as good as Jay Sharpe placing bets at your sportsbook, you have to adjust to keep from losing your shirt. And by adjust, often that means the odds themselves. What we would do is, find out who Mr. Sharpe was betting on, and then change our odds into the direction he was betting. For example, if he came in and placed X amount of dollars on the Giants +7 to cover against their opponent that week, we would drop the amount of points the Giants were getting to make their opponent look more attractive to other bettors."

But that information is not quite as acquirable as it used to be. In recent years Jay Sharpe's name has surfaced once again, only this time at a global level. He is now consulting for a betting firm that shares their sports betting analysis with select clients via a website called iSeeWinners.com. The subscribers in turn place large wagers through online sportsbooks from all over the world. With no way of knowing exactly who's behind the research of these sports wagers, most online sportsbooks are at a disadvantage compared to their Las Vegas counterparts in the 90's. Since the website launched in 2011, several sports betting sites have reported an increase of successful bettors that risk unusually large amounts of money.

One popular online sportsbook, with several members on their staff who are familiar with Jay Sharpe, has even confirmed that they actually subscribe to the sports picks provided by iSeeWinners.com. "If you can't beat them, join them" says Brian Catrell, an office manager for the sportsbook. "It's a small price to pay to not have to accept their action... I've known Jay and Don (another sports handicapper for the iSeeWinners.com firm) for three decades now. The man is a statistical genius and can determine true betting odds better than any oddsmaker I've ever encountered. When I learned that he was consulting for a firm that was also sharing their picks through a website, I knew it could be a problem for us if that site were to ever accumulate a lot of traffic."

It's not known for sure if any other online sportsbooks subscribe to their sports betting service or not. We've attempted to contact several popular sports betting sites, but none have replied to our emails and/or phone calls. But it makes sense according to Cantrell who stated, "it's like getting a second opinion from a doctor before having surgery. Sometimes your general practitioner just isn't knowledgeable enough in every part of the human anatomy. The same goes when oddsmakers are forced to create a line on every single game on any given day. If they leave any soft lines, guys like Mr. Sharpe are going to find them. You can bet on it!"
