Coming back from an 8-1 deficit in the final week of the race, skipper Jimmy Spithill led the team to a victory over New Zealand in San Francisco!
According to , only twice before in history has the race been this close in a winner-take-all final race, with the other nail biters being in 1983 and 1920. However, this was the first time a team had won after being behind by eight races.
