Program Emphasizes Cybersecurity to Align With Industry Trends

(firmenpresse) - SYRACUSE, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 09/25/13 -- There's always something new to learn in computer software and hardware. The from Syracuse University's and Computer Science is designed to give students the ability to create smart solutions in the face of ongoing and future industry developments. An established program on campus, it is now available completely online for students located outside of the area. Applications are now being accepted and classes begin in January 2014.

The program focuses on advanced skills for : complex problem-solving, operations analysis, active learning, critical thinking and decision-making. Two out of the four core courses focus on cybersecurity issues in architecture, hardware and software to reflect increasing awareness of a need for security in all types of computer products and systems. The 30-credit-hour program can be completed in 20 months.

Students have long been attracted to the M.S. in Computer Engineering at Syracuse for the chance to study with faculty members at the leading edge of innovation and discovery in this area. For example, Professor Wenliang (Kevin) Du has been exploring potential risks with mobile applications written for the Android system using the WebView platform, the subject of his paper that was recently presented at the 27th annual Computer Security Applications Conference. Du has also submitted a proposal to Google exploring ways to preserve WebView features while making it more secure, and is looking into whether other smartphone and tablet platforms may be affected by the same kind of risks.

Other Computer Engineering faculty research areas include the development of assured systems that gracefully degrade in the face of attack and failure, and the relationship between computational complexity, formal methods and programming language semantics.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that computer hardware engineers "who have a higher-level degree and knowledge" will have the advantage in the job market. Employment of software engineers is expected to grow 30 percent from 2010 to 2020, mainly driven by a growing demand for mobile technology, the growing use of systems and applications in health care and concerns over cybersecurity. The online M.S. in Computer Engineering can help ensure that graduates are positioned to take advantage of these workplace opportunities.
