(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 09/19/13 -- Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, visited two federally-funded crime prevention projects and announced support for a new crime prevention project targeting youth gangs in Toronto.

"Our Government is taking strong actions to prevent crime and improve the safety of our communities," said Minister Blaney. "Today, I had the opportunity to visit some of the innovative projects we fund that are giving at-risk youth the tools and opportunities to help them to steer clear of crime. These projects are clear examples of how our Government is helping Toronto communities tackle crime."

The Minister visited the following crime prevention projects, which are receiving federal funding:

In addition, Minister Blaney announced more than $3 million in funding over five years for Taking Action Against Gangs Scarborough (TAAGS), run by Agincourt Community Services Association. This project will help at-risk Scarborough youth steer clear of gangs and escape the violent lifestyle that gangs promote.

"Support for these Toronto projects demonstrates how the Harper Government is preventing crime and making our streets and communities safer places to live, work, and raise our families," said Roxanne James, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.

As part of our efforts to tackle crime, in 2012 our Government committed up to $10 million per year toward new crime prevention projects under the National Crime Prevention Strategy's Crime Prevention Action Fund.
