Rose bengal is a very unusual compound. It was originally used as a textile dye in the late 1800s, and later found a wide variety of diagnostic applications. There are more than 3,500 peer-reviewed publications describing the use of rose bengal in staining diseased tissue or identifying tissue irregularities.
