"Maker Week" Proclaimed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg September 16-20 as New York City Prepares for World Maker Faire September 21 & 22

Declared once again September 18, 2013 by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the entire week of World Maker Faire is "Maker Week."
Maker Week stands for all of what Maker Faire values: ingenuity, creativity, and a DIY spirit in a space that makers of every age and skill level can see, learn, do, and explore. Maker Week will continue to propel the maker movement forward by assembling the community of innovators, scientists, artists, food makers, tinkerers, crafters, and engineers who thrive on sharing their passion for making with others.

The littleBits Global Makeathon is the world's largest physical and virtual littleBits workshop. littleBits is bringing together makers from around the world for one day to bring their own cities to life. Join littleBits, with your Bits, your crafts, and your tools and Make Something that Does Something!
Wednesday, September 18: , New York Hall of Science, Queens, NY
MAKE magazine will host for a one-day workshop for maker pros. This unprecedented opportunity to network with fellow maker pros will give makers learn tips and hints, best practices, and avenues to successfully navigate the transition to maker pro. Co-hosts Dale Dougherty, Travis Good, and Haytham Elhawary join leaders at the forefront of the maker movement -- early pioneers who paved the road for others to benefit from their experience, both successes and pitfalls.

A follow-up to the Hardware Innovation Workshop, the NY Hardware Start-Up Meetup will feature hardware superstars such as Andrew "Bunnie" Huang, Jeff McAlvay, James "Laen" Neal, and David Lang.

Over 750 students get a sneak peek tour of Maker Faire as it's being set up for the weekend. Students meet and interact with selected makers, participate in maker activities, see maker performances, and get a glimpse of the setup process for this large-scale event over the course of a tour of the fairgrounds. The goal of Maker Faire Education Day is to ignite the maker in young people and show them all they can do in the world of making.
Thursday, September 19: , New York Hall of Science, Queens, NY
The Educator Meet-up brings together fellow educators for hands-on activities and projects to try out, dive into, and take back into the classroom, tours of the grounds as they're being set up for the Maker Faire, opportunities for mingling and idea-sharing, and conversations with Dale Dougherty, founder and CEO of Maker Media, and Margaret Honey, president and CEO of the New York Hall of Science. Also offered will be two special hands-on Arduino workshops, led by a member of Arduino.
Friday, September 20: , Atmel will host a public media/industry analyst panel on the maker community and education. Members of the panel include Atmel's Reza Kazerounian, CEO of Arduino Massimo Banzi, Atmel maker and Hexbug guru Bob Martin, Atmel Community Manager and University Liaison Sylvie Barak, university engineer professor Annmarie Thomas, 12-year old CEO and maker Quinn (QTechKnow), and MAKE Books Senior Editor Brian Jepson. The panel will be moderated by Windell H. Oskay of Evil Mad Scientists.

Artisan's Asylum and MAKE will deliver an intensive one-day workshop with the goal of helping makers through the process of setting up, characterizing, and planning out the stages of developing their own makerspace.
Saturday, September 21: , Long Island City, Queens, NY
Fellow maker cyclists will ride to World Maker Faire from Long Island City, Queens, at 10:15 am, from the Dutch Kills Green at the foot of the Queensboro Bridge. Riders get free parking at the bike valet, plus a collector's patch and entry into a raffle for prizes.

Open from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, the fourth annual World Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth -- a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker Movement. The Nerdy Derby is a no-rules, miniature car building and racing competition inspired by the Cub Scouts' Pinewood Derby. As part of their sponsorship, the KiX team is providing all of the materials for kids to build their mini racecars. KiX Cereal believes that today's clever kids are tomorrow's big problem solvers and are proud to take part in this year's event and support kids' maker ambitions.
