MADD Canada: Health and Public Safety Concerns Need to Be Addressed in Liquor Policy Review

ID: 1263965

(firmenpresse) - OAKVILLE, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 09/16/13 -- As British Columbia's Liquor Policy Review mulls changes to the alcohol sales system, MADD Canada urges the government and the public to look beyond promises of increased revenues and convenience, and consider the significant negative impacts that increased alcohol access and consumption will have on a wide range of health and public safety issues, including impaired driving.

"Canadian and international research shows that easing regulations around alcohol sales typically results in increased access to alcohol, increased consumption and increased alcohol-related problems in our communities," said MADD Canada Chief Executive Officer Andrew Murie. "We need to ensure that health and safety considerations are included in any debate on alcohol policy reform in British Columbia."

Mr. Murie will discuss how alcohol policy reform can be balanced against those public health and safety considerations during a public forum, hosted by the University of Victoria's Centre for Addictions Research (CARBC), titled "How can modern liquor laws be compatible with public health and safety?"

Mr. Murie will be making a submission to the Province's Liquor Policy Review earlier in the day and will outline the key recommendations presented.

Note: Panelists Andrew Murie, Tim Stockwell, Dan Reist and Kara Thompson will also be available for media interviews at 11 a.m., September 17 at CARBC's Vancouver office at 909-510 Burrard St.
