(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 09/12/13 -- Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will visit the City of Calgary, as well as the towns of High River and Gleichen, on September 16 and 17, 2013.

This visit will serve to celebrate excellence through the official launch of the new It's an Honour! travelling exhibit, highlight the creation of The Calgary Foundation's Smart and Caring Initiative, and recognize the contributions of individuals and organizations who have generously given back to their communities in the wake of the devastating floods that took place in June 2013.

COMMENDATION CITATIONS

Siksika Nation, Alberta

The Governor General's Commendation for Outstanding Service is awarded to those who during the floods of June 2013, through their generosity, perseverance and exemplary professionalism, have triumphed over adversity and shown their caring spirit to their fellow Canadians and the world, in their efforts at Siksika Nation, Alberta.

With open-handedness, courage and pride, members of the Siksika Nation and volunteers from neighbouring communities joined together to respond to the disaster. The entire community, from children to elders, is to be commended for its tremendous spirit and the remarkable example it has set.

The Citizens of Calgary, Alberta

The Governor General's Commendation for Outstanding Service is awarded to the Citizens of Calgary, Alberta, who during the floods of June 2013, through their generosity, perseverance and exemplary professionalism, have triumphed over adversity and shown their caring spirit to their fellow Canadians and the world.

Undeterred by the magnitude of the disaster, the citizens of Calgary demonstrated initiative, selflessness and an extraordinary commitment to the well-being of others, for which they can be very proud. The entire community, from children to elders, is to be commended for its tremendous spirit and the remarkable example it has set.





High River, Alberta

The Governor General's Commendation for Outstanding Service is awarded to those who during the floods of June 2013, through their generosity, perseverance and exemplary professionalism, have triumphed over adversity and shown their caring spirit to their fellow Canadians and the world, in their efforts at High River, Alberta.

In the face of a sudden and devastating disaster, citizens of High River and volunteers from neighbouring communities responded with resolve, resourcefulness and open-heartedness. The entire community, from children to elders, is to be commended for its tremendous spirit and the remarkable example it has set.

ABOUT THE GOVERNOR GENERAL'S COMMENDATION FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE

The Governor General's Commendation for Outstanding Service honours the exceptional contribution of individuals or groups to their community. This type of commendation is presented very rarely. Past recipients include firefighters for their tremendous efforts battling the fires in British Columbia's Southern Interior in the summer of 2003, members of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress for the role they played in organizing a 500-person election observation mission to monitor the rerun of the second round of voting in the Ukrainian presidential election on December 26, 2004, and the citizens of Hartley Bay, for their efforts to save and assist the passengers and crew members of The Queen of the North following its sinking off the coast of British Columbia on March 22, 2006.
