Harper Government Highlights Completion of Clean Energy Project in British Columbia

ID: 1263081

(firmenpresse) - RICHMOND, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/12/13 -- The Honourable Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Minister of National Revenue and Member of Parliament for Delta-Richmond East, on behalf of the Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today celebrated the official opening of the Harvest Power Energy Garden site, marking the completion of an innovative clean energy project in British Columbia.

"Our Government is supporting innovative projects across the country and positioning Canada at the forefront of clean energy technology to help protect our environment and create high-quality jobs," said Minister Findlay. "Projects like this one not only support our local economy but also demonstrate how we can use clean technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

The Harper Government provided $4 million through the Clean Energy Fund to B.C.-based Harvest Power to develop and demonstrate Canada's first high-efficiency system for producing renewable energy from food and yard waste. The objective is to extract energy in the form of electricity and heat or purified methane from organic waste, which would otherwise go to landfill. The purified methane is used to generate electricity and can be fed into the local natural gas system. The facility began producing electricity in March 2013 and now produces enough energy to power approximately 900 homes per year.

"This project is good news for British Columbians, and our Government is proud to be a part of it," said Minister Findlay. "New clean technology initiatives like the one announced today are helping Canada further its clean-tech industry while helping protect our environment."

This is just one of the innovative projects that the Clean Energy Fund is supporting to encourage the growth of a strong and competitive clean energy industry in Canada. Projects funded through this Fund range from carbon capture and storage technologies to wind, biomass and other forms of renewable energy.
