CRC Health Group Expands Eating Disorder Treatment Offerings as Continued Studies Show Eating Disorders Have Highest Mortality Rate of Any Mental Illness, Official Eating Disorder Diagnostics Are Updated

ID: 1262951

(firmenpresse) - CUPERTINO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/12/13 -- , the nation's largest network of behavioral health and addiction treatment programs, has expanded its treatment offerings for patients with eating disorders. The treatment additions follow this year's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-V updates that include the addition of binge eating disorder and changes to bulimia and anorexia diagnostic criteria, as well as studies that indicate that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, but that treatment is possible.

"CRC Health realizes that the prominence and dangers of eating disorders are only growing and has expanded the breadth and depth of our treatment offerings to address this increase," said R. Andrew Eckert, CRC Health Group's CEO.

Studies suggest that up to 24 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder in the United States including anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder. Sadly, only 1 in 10 receives treatment, and just 35% of those who do seek treatment get it at a specialized facility for eating disorders.

"It isn't surprising that increasing numbers of people are falling victim to eating disorders what with the media's relentless emphasis on body image and sexuality," says Tammy Holcomb, LPC, Executive Director of CRC Health's . "From Miley Cyrus' barely clothed performance at the VMAs to Kim Kardashian's baby weight, everyone's focus is on the body."

"Additionally, as the nation's obesity epidemic surges, the shift from a healthy desire to lose weight and be healthy to a full eating disorder can be subtle but rapid, creating even more serious issues," she adds.

Case in point, this month's news that research from the Mayo Clinic shows that overweight teens who lose weight can be at heightened risk of developing anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, as published in the journal Pediatrics.

Fortunately, the DSM-V classification of binge eating disorder may improve accessibility to appropriate treatment options as well as funding for research. Modifications to the diagnostic criteria for anorexia and bulimia in the DSM-V also create more precise diagnosis of the disorders, and will likely increase insurance reimbursement for treatment. CRC Health program staff even have received specialized training in the DSM-V's updates.

"CRC Health really offers the best national platform of eating disorder services to address growing treatment needs," said Holcomb. "Our broad scope of services -- from primary eating disorder treatment to treating co-occurring issues including substance abuse and diabulimia -- have enabled us to develop and share industry best practices that put our programs at the top of the treatment field."

CRC Health currently has three dedicated programs that treat eating disorders. These programs are in-network with over 28 insurance companies nationwide, with coverage available on a case-by-case basis:

Carolina House in Durham, N.C. - offers acute residential and seven day partial hospitalization programs (PHP) in Durham, and five day PHP and intensive outpatient program (IOP) services, along with weekend family programming and free community recovery groups in Raleigh.

Center for Hope of the Sierras on Reno, Nev. - offers residential, partial PHP (five and seven day), IOP and transitional living services.

Montecatini in Carlsbad, Calif. - offers residential, PHP and IOP.

The company also has two facilities that offer dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring substance abuse issues:

The Victorian in Newport Beach, Calif.

Sierra Tucson in Tucson, Ariz.

In addition, they now have several facilities that offer patients eating disorder support, such as Life Healing Center (Santa Fe, N.M.) and Wellness Resource Center (Boca Raton, Florida).
