Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life: You Don't Have to Do Much to Make a Difference

ID: 1262545

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 09/11/13 -- Next week, thousands of people won't be doing much, but they will be making a difference. During the week of September 14 to 22, people in more than 40 communities across Canada will be stepping up for the annual Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life to support the estimated 71,300 Canadians living with HIV/AIDS.

"Scotiabank operates in some 55 countries and we've seen the effects of HIV/AIDS on communities around the world. So, we are thrilled to once again partner with the Canadian AIDS Society for the 2013 Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life," says Kaz Flinn, Scotiabank Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility. "We, like the Canadian AIDS Society, are deeply committed to battling this life-threatening disease and fighting against the discrimination and stigma associated with it."

Since 1996, the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life has been a national project of the Canadian AIDS Society in partnership with Positive Living BC and the AIDS Committee of Toronto. The Walk has raised over $38 million and has attracted well over half a million participants. All of the money raised in each of the 46 hosting cities and communities goes towards supporting local services and programming for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS in the community where the funds were raised.

In addition to the fundraising, the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life also raises awareness about HIV/AIDS in Canada.

"All over Canada - and the world - we have been working towards ending the HIV epidemic, and there have been some amazing steps forward; but, there is still no cure and no vaccine and the rate of new infections in Canada isn't declining," concedes Monique Doolittle-Romas, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian AIDS Society. "The Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life is as important as it ever was to raise funds for programs and services as well as to remind people that HIV is still a priority in Canada."

Working with TBWA, a global marketing and advertising firm - who donated their time and expertise - the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life has launched a new theme for the 2013 campaign: You don't have to do much to make a difference. "There are many other movements and charities out there that are asking people to do various things as they raise money," observes Doolittle-Romas, "Many of these things are fun ways to get involved in the movement, but not necessarily things you would do on a day to day basis. With the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life, all you have to do is join us as we take a stroll through our communities or donate or sponsor a walker or a team. It's really not much, but it really makes a huge difference."
