(firmenpresse) - ALEXANDRIA, VA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/11/13 -- The American Diabetes Association (Association) is pleased to announce a $355,000 donation from the McLean, Virginia-based Subway Development Corporation of Washington (SDC). The check was presented to the Association yesterday at SDC's 16th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, where proceeds from the event also benefitted the Association.

"The American Diabetes Association is honored to have Subway Development Corporation of Washington (SDC) and their franchise owners in the Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Delaware areas join us in the fight to Stop Diabetes. The Association also salutes SUBWAY® restaurants for offering friendlier meal options for people with diabetes," said Greg Elfers, Chief Field Development Officer of the American Diabetes Association. "We are honored to have been selected once again as SDC's charity of choice. Through their generous support, we can continue to offer community outreach programs to help people with diabetes and continue to educate those at risk for type 2 diabetes. We appreciate their continued commitment which will help people lead healthier lives."

The donation marks the third year that SDC has designated the Association as their charity of choice, bringing the total charitable contribution to . The majority of the donation was raised from the sale of "Stop Diabetes Hands," where customers visiting Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia., and Delaware area Subway restaurants could make a $1 donation to the Association and receive a pin-up Stop Diabetes hand. More than 1200 restaurants across the region participated. The donation drive culminates in a charity golf tournament each September where proceeds also benefit the Association.

"The Subway Development Corporation of Washington is pleased to collaborate with the American Diabetes Association for a third year," said David Dickerson, Vice President of Operations, Subway Development Corporation of Washington. "Our success in raising funds and awareness is only possible because of the hard work of our franchisees, managers and Sandwich Artists at the restaurant level who have shown strong support of the donation drive. Subway is already well-known for its healthy options, but I believe it is also important for people living with diabetes to know that they can get a Diabetes Friendlier Meal Choice at any of our restaurants in the Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., and Delaware area that fits their dietary requirements."

In addition to the pin-up campaign and golf tournament, SDC supports the Association's signature fundraising events, including the Tour de Cure® held every June and the Step Out®: Walk to Stop Diabetes® held every October by providing food and by forming teams. Subway has also introduced, in select markets, their "Diabetes Friendlier Meal Choices" to ensure a variety of options for millions of customers with diabetes. This menu option allows customers to have the bread "scooped out" on the lower fat sandwich choices, reducing the amount of calories and carbohydrates.

The American Diabetes Association is leading the fight to Stop Diabetes and its deadly consequences and fighting for those affected by diabetes. The Association funds research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes; delivers services to hundreds of communities; provides objective and credible information; and gives voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes.
