Frequentz and Ocean Discovery Institute Partner to Host Student Research on the Accuracy of Seafood Labeling in San Diego
San Diego Track-and-Trace Technology Leader Sponsors Report Designed to Ensure Restaurants Are Aware of the Origin and Type of Seafood They Serve
(firmenpresse) - DEL MAR, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/03/13 -- Real-time traceability and information management provider and non-profit science education organization, Ocean Discovery Institute, have partnered to evaluate whether San Diego seafood restaurants are purchasing properly labeled seafood. The research, conducted by middle school students, follows a recent national report by the ocean advocacy group Oceana that revealed across the US, with rates hitting 52 percent in Southern California.
From January to May 2013, a group of 30 students conducted DNA testing on fish sold by several participating San Diego restaurants in a lab at San Diego State University. Supervised by scientists, the students tested the fish samples, then shipped them to genetic research firm Illumina, which helped determine what each specimen was, and where it was caught. Frequentz sponsored the report, which can be found or on the website.
"Frequentz's focus on making a difference when it comes to the safe consumption of food and pharmaceuticals includes aquaculture," said Michael Lucas, Frequentz President & CEO. "Europe has taken the initiative of tracking seafood to ensure consumer safety. We feel the efforts by Oceana and local groups such as Ocean Discovery Institute are helping to mitigate food mislabeling, which causes illness worldwide. It is imperative that seafood be tracked from capture to consumption. We need to pinpoint and prevent occurrences of mislabeling, as the consumer trusts the restaurant or retailer, which is usually only as knowledgeable as the label on a package."
Recipient of the for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, the Ocean Discovery Institute provides services at 13 public schools in the City Heights community of San Diego. The group connects more than 5,000 underrepresented children with hands-on, science-related projects.
"Ocean Discovery Institute exposes young children to learning opportunities in a real-life setting, giving them experiences they might not otherwise have," said Shara Fisler, Executive Director of Ocean Discovery Institute. "We are grateful to Frequentz for taking correct labeling of seafood seriously, and for providing our students with fun, challenging projects that enhance their education."
"We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to work alongside these students and help push the sustainable seafood movement here in San Diego," said Dustin Summerville, President of Harney Sushi.
There's an upcoming opportunity to support Ocean Discovery Institute at their annual Bubble Up! Gala, an elegant black-tie event, celebrating supporters and students' accomplishments on September 7, 2013. The event features cocktails, exciting auction items, an amazing dinner experience, plus the unique opportunity to meet students and engage in competitions to win prizes. To attend, visit
