Government supports awareness and prevention for children, youth and families

(firmenpresse) - BEAUCE, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 08/29/13 -- On behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health, the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism, and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Beauce, Quebec, announced today funding for a project to support diabetes and obesity prevention for children, youth and families living in Beauce.

"Diabetes is on the rise in Canada and worldwide, and obesity is one of the key preventable causes," said Minister Bernier. "That is why it is important that Canadians receive the information and tools they need to lead healthy, active lives and prevent chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes."

The project announced today supports obesity and diabetes prevention for children, youth and families by developing training, tools and resources for health care professionals and community organizations that work with families living in Beauce. Activities under these projects will increase awareness and encourage their children, students or clients to adopt healthy behaviours and improve their overall health outcomes.

"Beauce has the highest rate of diabetes in the Chaudiere-Appalaches region," said Mr. Michel Roy, president of the board of directors of the Cooperative de sante Robert-Cliche. "We are very pleased to receive the support of the Government of Canada to pursue this unique project to provide support, learning and mutual assistance, to our diabetes prevention programming for Beauce families."

Diabetes affects approximately two and a half million Canadians. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90 to 95 per cent of diabetes cases in Canada. It can often be prevented or delayed with regular physical activity, healthy eating and by maintaining a healthy weight. If not managed properly, diabetes can lead to serious complications like heart disease, stroke, blindness, chronic kidney disease, nervous system damage, and amputation.

The Government of Canada makes significant annual investments in the Canadian Diabetes Strategy to raise awareness of the disease and its risk factors and to create the first integrated national diabetes surveillance system. Providing Canadians with information to support the prevention of chronic diseases is a priority for the government. For example, our CANRISK questionnaire can help Canadians understand the risk factors for type 2 diabetes, including body weight, ethnicity, physical activity and family history.
