Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Sooke's Community Infrastructure
(firmenpresse) - SOOKE, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/28/13 -- Today, the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of State and Chief Government Whip and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, on behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for three projects in the District of Sooke under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"Our Government is focused on what matters to Canadians - creating jobs and growth," said Minister Duncan. "By investing in local infrastructure, our Government continues to support communities across the country. Here in Sooke, our funding will help create a safe and pleasant environment for all to enjoy."
The Harper Government invested over $80,000 to upgrade Sooke Region Museum and Visitors Centre, Camp Barnard, and the Charters River Salmon Interpretive Centre. The Sooke Region Historical Society received $27,500 to be able to conduct upgrades to flooring, lighting, and roofing. The water supply pipe leading to the back country of Camp Barnard will be replaced with aid from an investment of $23,250. In addition, $29,350 was provided to the Charters River Salmon Interpretive Centre to install new seating and viewing platforms, lighting controls, and security.
"This federal support has been crucial to our efforts to upgrade our infrastructure to better serve residents and visitors," said Ray Vowles, President of the Sooke Region Historical Society. "The end results include better protected history, the increased ability to self-generate financial resources and to provide people with an improved experience."
"These funds provided to Camp Barnard will ensure a secure water supply is available to all camping areas on site, enabling the camp to accommodate more campers and larger events than currently possible," said Alamin Pirani, Executive Director for Scouts Canada. "As a result of the work, Scouts Canada is able to host a Pacific Scout Jamboree in July of 2015. This single event will see some 3000 youth and leaders attend the site from BC and across Canada for a week of camping, skills development and fun. Addressing the water supply issue was a critical component to scheduling this event and others like it in future."
"We work extremely hard to accomplish our objective of providing interesting educational programs for our youth and the general public to learn more about sustaining our wild Pacific salmon, but it cannot be done without financial assistance," said Elida Peers, Administrator of the Juan de Fuca Salmon Restoration Society. "As we are all volunteers, it has been so good to be in a position to offer projects to local businesses and contractors to help carry out the very necessary infrastructure development that we have undertaken. Our entire region will benefit from the assistance that has been provided to us."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
