Three WOLFF cranes of WOLFFKRAN Austria in action on Alpine construction site of an aerial tramway in Ischgl
Ischgl – August 2013. 2812 meters above sea level, the assembly of a tower crane quickly turns into a major challenge. A challenge that WOLFFKRAN Austria faced in Ischgl, one of the largest ski resorts in the Alps. For the expansion of the ski lifts of Silvrettaseilbahn AG, WOLFFKRAN Austria assembled three WOLFF WK 5015 cranes. These had to be flown to the construction site piece by piece and assembled with a heavy lift helicopter. The assembly by helicopter not only meant a huge logistical and planning effort for WOLFFKRAN Austria, but also an out of the ordinary operation in a high Alpine landscape.
(firmenpresse) - When awarding the contract Silvrettaseilbahn AG not only took into account the lifting capacities of the cranes but also assessed the likelihood of downtimes and ease of assembly. The WK 5015 turned out the clear winner. The three WOLFF cranes, with hook heights of 24, 78 and 100.5 meters, were used to erect the two pylons 64 and 90 meters high for the new aerial tramway. In addition to the crane rental WOLFFKRAN Austria also won the contract for the assembly and logistics concept.
Proven WOLFF system performs convincingly in the assembly by helicopter
Like all WOLFF cranes the WK 5015 is equipped with the patented pin connection which has been in use on every construction site over the past 50 years. Tower sections can be assembled and dismantled without any special tools, making crane erection and disassembly significantly easier.
Although all WOLFF cranes convince with easy assembly and economic transport, this particular project in extreme heights demanded a special logistical effort. Starting point for the professional assembly was the transport of the crane components by saddle truck to the Fimbatal 1950 m above sea level. A heavy lift helicopter from Heliswiss International AG with a lifting capacity of up to five tons was used for the onward transportation. To avoid exceeding maximum load limits very careful advance planning was required and the crane components had to be disassembled into their individual parts.
In order to ensure stability even in extreme weather conditions the crane was bolted onto 6.5 m x 6.5 m foundation platforms, which were cast in concrete on-site, with foundation anchors.
Successful premiere by the WOLFFKRAN Austria assembly team
The helicopter moved a total of approximately 200 tons of crane parts through the air. Despite the enormous effort required the team of six WOLFF crane technicians and the Heliswiss crew assembled the cranes in a total record time of four days, almost just as fast as for a routine crane assembly.
An assembly by helicopter is the pinnacle of crane erection for any crane technician. Reliability and genuine team spirit is needed when working at dizzying heights. For WOLFFKRAN Austria the job in Ischgl was the first assembly of its kind. „Despite being a first, the tight schedule and the complex conditions, WOLFFKRAN Austria coped with the assembly professionally and without any problem” said Engineer Markus Walser, Board of Silvrettaseilbahn AG, in summing up the operation. The Austrians received support from their colleagues from the WOLFFKRAN subsidiary in Switzerland, who have completed several helicopter assembly jobs, including in the construction of the Linth-Limmern pumped storage power plant, the ski jump in Einsiedeln and an aerial tram in Locarno.
WOLFFKRAN Austria mastered its baptism of fire at such ‘freezing’ heights brilliantly. The new "Piz Val Gronda E5" aerial tramway is planned to start transporting winter sports lovers during this upcoming ski season.
