National Farm-Level Mink Biosecurity Standard Released
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 08/23/13 -- A new joint industry-government national biosecurity standard was announced today that will help Canadian mink farmers protect the health of their animals on-farm.
"Canadian mink farmers can use the Standard to enhance their existing farm-level biosecurity practices," said Dr. Ian Alexander, Chief Veterinary Officer for Canada. "Enhancing or adopting new biosecurity practices can help protect animals by preventing or reducing the severity of disease outbreaks."
"The Biosecurity Standard provides a very practical process for Canadian mink farmers to access and implement biosecurity on their farms," commented Gary Hazlewood, Executive Director of the Canada Mink Breeders Association. "It is a better business tool."
Mink farmers can use the National Farm-Level Mink Biosecurity Standard to develop a biosecurity program tailored to their operation. Creating or enhancing biosecurity on-farm can help reduce the risk of disease entering and spreading within the operation or being passed to other farmers in the area.
The Standard focuses on three key areas:
The Standard was developed over three years through a partnership with the Canada Mink Breeders Association, the Fur Farmers of Canada Marketing Association and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), in collaboration with producers, academia, and provincial governments. Funding was provided by the Growing Forward policy initiative of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. It was designed specifically for the Canadian mink industry, and is applicable to operations of all types and sizes.
