Government of Canada Supports Montreal in Fight Against Crime

(firmenpresse) - MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 08/22/13 -- Today, the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, on behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, announced support for a crime prevention project, the Youth Inclusion Program, which helps provide at-risk youth in Montreal with the life skills they need to make smart choices and avoid criminal activities.

"Our Government is committed to preventing crime and improving the safety of our communities," said Minister Van Loan. "Through this project, at-risk youth are given the tools and opportunities they need to steer clear of crime. Our Government's support is helping Montreal communities tackle youth crime and build stronger, safer communities."

Operating in the Montreal communities of Sud-Ouest and Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, the Youth Inclusion Program works with youth aged 12-17 at risk of delinquency and their families to provide access to mainstream and specialized services in their community. The program aims to reduce youth crime and anti-social behaviours by fostering the development of new skills, encouraging participation in social activities and by providing assistance with schoolwork.

The Government of Canada is providing $1.5 million over 5 years to Les YMCA du Quebec to implement the Youth Inclusion Program. Support for this project demonstrates the Government's commitment to preventing crime, and making our streets and communities safer places to live, work, and raise our families.

From April 2012 to March 2013, the Government funded 105 active, multi-year community-based crime prevention programs through Public Safety Canada's National Crime Prevention Centre, in which more than 16,000 at-risk youth participated.

As part of our efforts to tackle crime, in 2012 our Government committed up to $10 million toward new crime prevention projects under the National Crime Prevention Strategy's Crime Prevention Action Fund.
