Minister Ambrose addresses the 146th Canadian Medical Association Meeting
Working Together for Real Outcomes
(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/19/13 -- The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health, attended the 146th Canadian Medical Association (CMA), General Council Meeting.
During her keynote, Minister Ambrose acknowledged that spousal violence alone costs society at least $7.4 billion a year. Of that, almost $6 billion accounts for the healthcare costs for medical treatment and psychological services.
Minister Ambrose committed to addressing the issue of family violence as a public health issue, through a holistic approach as Minister of Health.
"Family violence threatens not only our physical and mental health; it also puts a huge strain on day-to-day personal and business activities, on the communities in which we live, and on our healthcare system," said the Honourable Rona Ambrose. "I am committed to working with all orders of government and organizations to lead change and gain momentum on the issue of family violence."
Minister Ambrose also expressed a need to renew attention to research and innovation in healthcare.
"Innovation is very important when it comes to the long-term sustainability of our healthcare system," said the Honourable Rona Ambrose. "If we want to ensure our public system is sustainable then we must explore the important role of innovation and research as a means to improve the efficiency and productivity of the health system."
The Minister also outlined several key priorities areas she would focus on including:
Following her keynote address, the Minister met with the CMA Executive Committee and held a series of stakeholder meetings.
"As the new Health Minister, I am committed to working with the provinces and territories healthcare providers, the research community, and organizations like the CMA to learn how we together can improve the health system and healthcare for all Canadians," said the Honourable Rona Ambrose.
