(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 08/19/13 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today issued the following statement to mark the launch of the 108th Annual Conference of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP).

"Organizations like the CACP and their members are important partners in helping our Government ensure the safety and security of Canadians. Their extensive frontline policing experience and knowledge are invaluable in helping shape federal policies, legislation and other initiatives. Over the past year, the partnership between Public Safety Canada and the CACP has been fundamental in advancing the initiative, a federal, provincial, territorial (FPT) joint effort aimed at increasing efficiency and effectiveness in order to help sustain policing in Canada.

Most recently under the Economics of Policing initiative, Public Safety Canada launched the , a database of innovative and cost-effective policing initiatives from across Canada that aims to help police services learn from one another's best practices. The Index is the first police information-sharing tool of its kind in Canada. As this is a truly collaborative undertaking, Public Safety Canada will work with law enforcement and policing partners to regularly update the Index in order to ensure it remains a current and useful tool for police.

Since coming into power, our Government has been unwavering in its commitment to providing law enforcement with the tools it needs to help keep Canadians safe. Important achievements over the last several months include:

On behalf of the Government of Canada I wish the CACP a successful and productive annual conference. I look forward to working with the Association and our other partners as we continue to develop policies, legislation and other initiatives to address issues facing law enforcement in Canada, including the sustainability of policing."
