Deny Law School Accreditation to Anti-Gay University: National Secular Group
(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 08/07/13 -- The Centre for Inquiry (CFI), Canada's largest secularism-focused educational charity, urges the Federation of Law Societies of Canada to reject the application by Trinity Western University (TWU) to open a law school.
TWU discriminates against prospective LGBQT lawyers through a covenant which points to Biblical passages to ban "sexual intimacy" outside heterosexual marriage. A married gay law student could be expelled for sleeping with his or her spouse.
"As the annual number of law school openings are controlled, this limitation on gay applicants is unacceptable," said Kevin Smith, CFI President.
TWU claims the right to discriminate because it is "private." But CRA tax forms show TWU receiving more than $1 million in federal, provincial and municipal funding in 2012. The taxpayer subsidized another roughly $2.2 million through tax-deducted donations.
"In accepting public funds, TWU must follow the Canadian Human Rights Act as a prerequisite for accreditation," said Smith.
Law schools have a special obligation to nurture respect for the law, rather than enforce discriminatory policies.
