Minister Oliver Highlights Important Milestone Towards Canadian Energy Security
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 08/01/13 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, issued the following statement today following TransCanada's announcement to move forward with their Energy East Pipeline Project proposal. This project aims to carry Canadian crude from Alberta and Saskatchewan to refineries in Quebec and New Brunswick.
"Our Government welcomes the prospect of transporting Canadian crude oil from Western Canada to consumers and refineries in Eastern Canada and ultimately to new markets abroad.
"Initiatives like this could allow Canadian refineries to process more potentially lower priced Canadian oil, enhancing Canada's energy security and making our country less reliant on foreign oil.
"Our Government will only allow energy projects to proceed if they are proven safe for Canadians after an independent, science-based environmental and regulatory review.
"In 2012, 83 percent of crude oil deliveries to Atlantic Canadian refineries and 92 percent of crude oil deliveries to refineries in Quebec were imported, from countries like Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Angola.
"With our plan for Responsible Resources Development, we have increased the protection of the environment, streamlined regulatory reviews and are aggressively working to reach new markets for Canadian natural resources.
"Subject to regulatory approval, the Harper Government supports energy infrastructure projects that will create jobs and generate economic growth in Canada for future generations."
