Harper Government Advances Senate Reform
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 07/31/13 -- The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of State for Democratic Reform, today announced that the Government is submitting factums for references on Senate reform that will be heard respectively in the Quebec Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
The factums set out the Government's arguments for the questions raised in the two references, which focus on the appropriate amending procedures for Senate reform. While both references include questions on the Government's Senate reform legislation, the questions in the Supreme Court reference extend to a broader range of reforms that could be contemplated in the future.
"Our Government remains committed to Senate reform and we remain confident that Parliament has the authority to enact the improvements to the Senate contained in our Senate reform legislation," said Minister Poilievre. "The opinion of the Supreme Court will allow us to move forward by providing clarity on the appropriate amending procedures."
The Quebec reference will be held on September 10-11, 2013 and the Supreme Court reference will be held on November 12-14, 2013.
