(firmenpresse) - OAKBROOK TERRACE, IL -- (Marketwired) -- 07/30/13 -- Redbox rented its three billionth disc in the U.S. this month, adding yet another milestone to the company's history of success since launching a little more than 10 years ago. To thank America for making Redbox its destination for entertainment, the company is offering free promotional codes on the this Thursday, August 1, valid for free one-day movie and video-game rentals at any U.S. Redbox location.
"It's hard to imagine 3 billion of anything, really. But when you equate that to the number of times Americans have watched Hollywood's best movies or become engrossed in new video games, this milestone becomes even more meaningful," said Anne Saunders, president, Redbox. "We're thrilled to celebrate this milestone with our customers for all the times they've brought Redbox home with them."
The 3 billionth Redbox rental, , by Sony Pictures, was rented at a Walgreens in Littleton, Colo. The next Redbox rental was a PlayStation® 3 video game, , rented at a Walmart Supercenter in Kennesaw, Ga.
Redbox reached 1 billion rentals in its seventh year of operation, and it notched 2 billion total rentals just 18 months later, in March 2012. The company reached its most recent milestone in record time again, taking just 16 months to reach 3 billion movie and video game rentals.
To put the feat into perspective, consider that 3 billion discs laid side by side would wrap around the world nearly nine times (approximately 223,693 miles).
Redbox reached another milestone in March 2013, recording more than 4 million rentals in one day for the first time ever.
