Seized Dangerous Products from Retailer in Langley, B.C.: Well Beings Health & Nutrition Centre

Three unauthorized health products that may pose serious risks to the health of Canadians were seized by Health Canada at Well Beings Health & Nutrition Centre located at Unit 202-22259 48th Ave, Langley, BC. The labels of these products indicate that they contain ingredients that require a prescription to be sold in Canada.
Who is affected:
Consumers who have purchased or used any of these unauthorized products: Progesta-Care, DHEA 25 Age-Free or DHEA 50 Age-Free.
What consumers should do:
- Consult your healthcare practitioner if you have used any of these products and are concerned about your health.
- Read the label of the products you buy to verify that they have been assessed by Health Canada for safety, effectiveness and quality. Health products that have been authorized for sale by Health Canada will have an eight-digit Drug Identification Number (DIN), a Natural Product Number (NPN) or a Homeopathic Medicine Number (DIN-HM) on the label.

What Health Canada is doing:
Health Canada is also working with the Canada Border Services Agency to stop any shipments of any of these products from entering Canada.
Background:
DHEA is a controlled drug that can cause higher than normal levels of female and male hormones in the body and could increase the risk of prostate, breast, ovarian, and other hormone-sensitive cancers. Potential side effects include serious cardiovascular disease, changes in fertility and sperm production. DHEA should be avoided by individuals with a history of abnormal heart rhythms, blood clotting disorders, liver disease and those who are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Progesterone can be associated with serious side effects, in particular in certain vulnerable patients (i.e. patients at risk of blood clots). Patients who are taking progesterone containing medications (i.e. birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy) may be at an elevated risk due to their overall progesterone exposure. However, if this unauthorized product contains progesterone cream as labelled, health risks would likely arise after long term use.
