Available with up to 10 MB of on-chip RAM: RZ/A1 Group of MPUs enables implementation of WXGA graphics displays without the need for additional external memory
(PresseBox) - MSC will offer the new products in the RZ/A1 Group of ARM® Cortex(TM) -A9 embedded microprocessors (MPUs) from Renesas Electronics. With up to 10 MB of on-chip RAM and various peripheral functions such as camera input, hardware-accelerated graphics output, OpenVG 1.1 and audio, the new embedded MPU solutions are ideally suited for creating sophisticated human machine interface (HMI) implementations.
The RZ/A1 Group has a 2D graphics acceleration engine that conforms to the OpenVG 1.1 interface. This enables a high-precision 2D graphical display and, at the same time, reduced load for the actual CPU core. Since OpenVG uses vector graphics calculated during render time for the image composition, highly complex animations can be generated, without the need to connect some additional megabytes of external memory to the MPUs. In addition, as a standardized programming interface, OpenVG 1.1 is compatible with many existing human machine interfaces (HMI) from third parties.
The video display controller, which is also integrated, offers up to two video inputs for various formats, also including PAL, and can automatically scale the video signal. Formats up to 1999 x 2035 pixels are supported at the outputs. In addition, the controller provides functions such as video recording, image capture including JPEG encoding as well as diverse functions for image optimizations.
Thanks to the extremely large on-chip RAM, graphics displays with a resolution of up to 1280 x 768 pixels without additional external DRAM can be realized with these innovative embedded MPUs. Since the on-chip RAM enables memory accesses with maximum bandwidth and low latency, the overall system performance can be increased by up to 50 percent in comparison to solutions with external DRAM. In addition, the usual special power supply for the DRAM is not required. The reduction in the number of additional components needed not only reduces the PCB space requirement and reduces power consumption, but the overall system cost is also lowered. At the same time, because the memory required is implemented on-chip, all concerns regarding long-term DRAM procurement are eliminated.
The peripheral functions of the RZ/A1 Group of embedded MPUs were for the most part inherited or further enhanced from the Renesas SH7260 series, which has a proven track record. Therefore, developers can make full use of their knowledge and experience with previous Renesas products in the development of future RZ/A1-based systems.
This scalable concept is supported by a broad range of highly flexible development tools from tool vendors who also offered support for Renesas MPUs in the past. Furthermore, through a joint development by Renesas and ARM, the CMSIS (Cortex Microcontroller Software Interface Standard)-RTOS RTX, a real-time operating system (RTOS) for Cortex-M, has been adapted to work with Cortex-A. This enables easy porting of application resources developed for the Cortex-M to the Cortex-A, and provides performance scalability in fields requiring real-time performance. A starter kit based on the Development Studio 5 (DS-5) including real-time operating system (Keil CMSIS-RTOS RTX) is available for download free of charge on the ARM Ltd. website.
