(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/27/13 -- The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, today invited Canadians to express their views on the and issues related to the safety of plasma donation.

The consultation is a follow-up to an April 2013 round table discussion with stakeholders about the practice of paying donors whose plasma is used in the creation of plasma-derived pharmaceuticals. As Provincial and Territorial governments have the authority to determine whether payment for plasma is allowed in their respective jurisdiction, the information collected in this consultation process will be shared with the Provinces and Territories to inform their policy and decision making processes.

The Government of Canada fully supports the current practice of voluntary donation of plasma for the purposes of blood transfusions. The practice of payment for donations of plasma for the creation of plasma-derived pharmaceuticals has occurred in Canada for 30 years and is permitted in many other countries, including the United States.

"I understand that Canadians have a vested interest in the safety of Canada's blood system," said Minister Aglukkaq. "That's why today I'm inviting Canadians to express their views on plasma donation."

As part of the consultation process, Health Canada has produced a document to help Canadians weigh their concerns against the strong safety measures the federal government has in place to ensure the safety of the blood supply.

Health Canada has posted the , which details what Health Canada heard from stakeholders at the April 2013 session in Toronto, on its website. A second document provides general on the topic.

After reading these documents, Canadians are invited to provide their views. Comments will be accepted until July 26, 2013.
