Ministers Aglukkaq and Ritz Unveil the Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines in Support of Cutting Red Tape
New Initiative Reduces the Regulatory Burden for Canadian Laboratories
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/20/13 -- The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health and the Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, today unveiled the first edition of the Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines (CBSG) as part of the Government of Canada's ambitious plan to cut red tape and support Canadian businesses in their efforts to create jobs, growth and investment in the future.
The CBSG details the biosafety requirements for the safe handling and storing of human and certain animal pathogens and toxins. It provides clear guidance on how facilities must comply with regulations, reducing the potential for misinterpretation of safety requirements. While enhancing the safe and secure management of pathogens, it will also reduce time and costs for laboratories, streamline the import permit process, reduce paperwork and improve service delivery.
"Until now, laboratory researchers and workers in Canada have been working under multiple biosafety standards and guidelines," said Minister Aglukkaq. "This move streamlines these biosafety practices into a single, comprehensive document, so there is no room for confusion when pathogen safety is concerned."
"The work is an excellent example of collaboration between government and stakeholders to cut down on duplication." said Minister Ritz. "It will now be easier for regulated parties to comply with safety and security requirements."
Cutting red tape and ensuring that the regulatory process is transparent and responsive is one of the most important initiatives government can undertake to help businesses thrive. The Government's Red Tape Reduction Action Plan puts a permanent cap on the size and cost of regulation, helping to cement Canada's international reputation as one of the best places in the world to do business.
"Some regulation is necessary to protect the health and safety of Canadians," said The Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board and lead minister for the Action Plan. "But we must remain vigilant when it comes to ensuring that regulation does not place an unnecessary burden on small business."
The Red Tape Reduction Action Plan is the product of business community input into a year-long commission. It includes 90 department-specific reforms-common-sense solutions to business irritants ranging from tax and payroll to labour, transport and trade, as well as six whole-of-government systemic changes. The vast majority of these reforms, which include time-saving measures like single windows and electronic submissions, will be implemented in the next three years.
