(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/17/13 -- Two groups of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) military personnel departed today from Edmonton, Alta., and Shilo, Man., for Kabul, Afghanistan. The military personnel will participate in the third and final rotation of Operation Attention, the Canadian Contribution Training Mission - Afghanistan from June 2013 to March 2014.

"Our military personnel show an unwavering commitment to the effort in Afghanistan through their participation in the training mission," said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence. "Canada remains dedicated to building the capacity of the Afghan National Security Forces to ensure they are able to stabilize and secure their country."

Throughout the months of June and July, approximately 900 Canadian military personnel will be deployed in the area of Kabul, gradually replacing Canadian military members who were deployed in the second rotation. Most Canadian Contribution Training Mission - Afghanistan members will serve with the Training Advisory Groups assigned to the Afghan National Army, Afghan National Police, and the Afghan Air Force, and with various training establishments to assist the Afghan leadership and instructor cadre with tasks such as curriculum design and the development of teaching skills.

"Our troops have served with distinction in Afghanistan for over a decade," said Lieutenant-General Peter Devlin, Commander of the Canadian Army. "They have shown bravery, professionalism and dedication. The efforts of our troops will continue to have a positive effect on the national security forces of Afghanistan and will help them further develop the expertise and capacity to effectively stabilize Afghanistan."

Canada is the second largest contributor to the NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan after the United States. Up to 900 Canadian Armed Forces members are deployed in Kabul and at the Regional Military Training Centre North in Mazar-e-Sharif as part of Operation Attention. It is part of Canada's whole-of-government effort to help Afghans rebuild Afghanistan into a viable country that is better governed, more stable and secure, and never again a safe haven for terrorists. Their mission is undertaken alongside 38 partner nations to ensure the growth, professionalization and capacity-building of the Afghan National Army, Afghan National Police, and the Afghan Air Force.
