Calgary Folk Music Festival Wins Three Awards
(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/14/13 -- The Calgary Folk Music Festival is the proud recipient of three key awards from provincial and municipal organizations, recognizing excellence and dedication to improving the quality of life in the community, innovative environmental initiatives and top festival honours.
The first was June 6, 2013, as the recipient of an Emerald Award in the non-profit category for its commitment to environmental initiatives. These awards are judged on four criteria: environmental benefit and outcome, long-term commitment, influence on others and innovation and are judged by panel of industry, corporate and the community experts.
On June 12, 2013 the Festival was presented with a Calgary Award for Environmental Achievement. The Calgary Awards is the City of Calgary's official citizen recognition program celebrating local organizations and individuals for their outstanding achievements and significant contributions for improving the quality of life in Calgary.
Last but not least, for the 16th consecutive year the Festival was chosen by readers for top spot in FFWD Weekly's annual Best of Calgary poll in the Best Festival category, announced in its June 13, 2013 edition.
Background
In 1997, the Calgary Folk Fest began to introduce environmental initiatives aimed at reducing waste, increasing recycling and promoting human-powered travel back and forth from the urban festival site on Prince's Island Park. For the last 16 years, these grassroots environmental programs have grown into a governing philosophy for the organization. The First Calgary Financial Eco-Initiatives program at the Calgary Folk Music Festival features complimentary bike parking for audience members and volunteers, at the Cenovus bike lock up, co-mingled recycling, beer-cup composting, a reusable plate program, wind and solar-powered stages, organics composting, plus the festival site is bottled water free, supported by the TD Water Stations. In addition to the award-winning initiatives at the annual festival site at Prince's Island Park, the Festival's commitment to the environment has become a part of everyday operations with the building and completion of Festival Hall, the Festival's new permanent office and year-round performance venue.
