Canadian Food Inspection Agency Launches Consultations to Modernize Food Labelling
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/13/13 -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has launched a consultation with consumer, industry and other stakeholders to identify ways to better respond to changing consumer expectations and industry needs related to food labelling.
This review of Canada's existing food labelling requirements will assess how the CFIA's approach to labels can best provide consumers with the information they need to make meaningful and informed decisions. The review will also examine changes needed to allow industry to effectively market their products and communicate to consumers through labels. For example, this initiative will look at food labelling regulations, policies and guidelines such as best before dates, list of ingredients, common name, and non-health and safety related claims such as local or natural. It will also examine the roles and responsibilities that consumers, industry and government play in food labelling.
"This initiative demonstrates the Government of Canada's commitment to keep pace with the evolving food labelling environment and implement the best approaches so consumers have the information they need when buying food," said Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. "The Government of Canada is committed to working with all players, including industry and consumers, in this process."
Consumers, industry and other stakeholders will have an opportunity to provide feedback on this initiative through an online consultation that is now available on the CFIA website.
