JustPotters to kick off 24-hour pottery marathon fundraiser
Local social enterprise employs people facing barriers to work

On Friday, June 14 at 8 p.m., JustPotters is kicking off its annual 24-hour fundraiser, . Potters will be making pottery on the wheel for 24 consecutive hours to raise funds to allow JustPotters to continue providing meaningful employment to people facing barriers such as addiction, mental health challenges, physical limitations and being new to Canada.
JustPotters is part of JustWork, a Vancouver-based non-profit organization that operates three local social enterprises - JustPotters, JustCatering and JustRenos. JustPotters' employees create and sell handmade pottery and crafts to help support the mandate.
"What sets us apart is that JustPotters gives consumers an opportunity to use their purchasing power toward good," said David Holcomb, co-founder and general manager of JustWork. "By donating or purchasing our beautiful, locally-made products, you're helping us provide dignified employment to people who are facing barriers that often feel insurmountable. This results in much more stability in their lives and greatly strengthens their self-confidence - and our community."
On Saturday, June 15, the public is welcome to visit from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to meet the potters and watch them as they throw pottery on the wheel for Pottery24. JustPotters will also be selling and making pottery live at Commercial Drive's Car Free Day Festival on Sunday, June 16.
This year, JustPotters' goal is to raise $25,000. Every donation makes a difference: $24 = 1 box of clay or 40 mugs, $240 = 1 week's wages for 1 part-time potter or 10 boxes of clay, $1,200 = 1 potter's wheel producing 5 weeks of work or 50 boxes of clay and $3,000 = a new kiln.
