Canada Takes a Leadership Role in Helping Senegal Join the G-8 New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition
(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwired) -- 06/08/13 -- Increasing private investment in Africa's agriculture sector will help lift millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa out of poverty. Canada is taking a leadership role, on behalf of G-8 countries, to support in joining the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition, announced the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation, today during a G-8 New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition event held in London, United Kingdom.
"We are pleased to be working with Senegal to increase the development of the agriculture sector to spur economic growth that increases incomes and reduces hunger, poverty, and undernutrition," said Minister Fantino. "Canada is an important contributor to the New Alliance and will continue to be a key partner in fostering sustainable agricultural development in Africa. By helping countries with significant agricultural growth potential such as Senegal join our efforts, Canada is helping to lift millions of people in Africa out of poverty."
Established at the G-8 Summit last year, the New Alliance works to attract private investment for inclusive agricultural growth that aims to lift fifty million Africans out of poverty over the next decade. Canada supports this innovative approach to stimulating policy reform and unlocking private sector investments in African agriculture.

"The vitality of the private sector will be one of our best assets for ensuring sustainable growth in our country. The Senegalese are eager to benefit from opportunities stemming from public-private partnerships, particularly funding for the agricultural sector."
The goals of the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition are to increase responsible domestic and foreign private investments in African agriculture, take innovations that can enhance agricultural productivity to scale, and reduce the risk borne by vulnerable economies and communities. Canada supports efforts by African governments to expand the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition to countries with significant trade and agricultural growth potential. In 2012, 21 African and 27 multinational companies signed letters of intent to make investments along the entire agricultural value chain-from farm to fork.
With the launch of new Country Cooperation Frameworks this year, the number of public-private partnerships in the agricultural sector in Africa will increase significantly. As part of this commitment, Canada will provide support to Senegal as it works to develop a Country Cooperation Framework, one of the key steps toward securing membership in the New Alliance.
reaffirms Canada's commitment to improving nutrition and access to food. The new Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development will continue to implement the mandate of poverty alleviation by helping to ensure families have access to the nutrition they need to live healthy lives, contribute to their communities and grow their economies.
