Professional Institute Celebrates the True Spirit of National Public Service Week 2013

ID: 1234884

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/07/13 -- The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) will celebrate the dedication and achievements of thousands of professional public servants across the country during National Public Service Week (June 9 - 15) despite the elimination of thousands of jobs, the closing of many programs and the impacts on numerous services caused by the current government's ongoing cuts.

"Unfortunately there has been little cause for celebration in recent years," said PIPSC President Gary Corbett. "The public service faces ongoing budget, program and staff cuts. All the more reason for us to underline the tremendous contribution that our members make to this country."

National Public Service Week was intended as the collective expression of the pride public service professionals take in their work and in serving their fellow Canadians. The full title of the enabling legislation that made this annual celebration of the public service official government policy is the National Public Service Week: Serving Canadians Better Act.

"To members of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, and to our fellow citizens, service is both a personal and a collective undertaking," added Corbett. "Serving Canadians and making Canada a better place to live in is something we all do better together."

During National Public Service Week, PIPSC will provide all Canadians with an opportunity to voice their support for professional public servants and oppose the government's continuing cuts to jobs, programs and services by sending a message to Prime Minister Harper.

In the days ahead, Mr. Corbett and other Institute representatives will be visiting public service offices to meet PIPSC members at their work sites and to promote awareness of a new membership engagement initiative - Better Together. Ads will appear in National Capital Region newspapers, in social media, and a national contest will run on Twitter throughout the week to introduce the initiative and engage all PIPSC members.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents some 57,000 professionals and scientists across Canada's public sector. Next week marks the twenty-first anniversary of National Public Service Week, an occasion first promoted by PIPSC members.
