Hamilton Walk for Muscular Dystrophy
Only 4 days away! Coming Together to Make Muscles Move
(firmenpresse) - HAMILTON, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/05/13 -- On Sunday, June 9th, Hamilton will be moving its muscles to make an impact in the fight against muscular dystrophy. The community will be coming together to support thousands of children, teens and adults who are affected by neuromuscular disorders in Canada at the annual Hamilton Walk for Muscular Dystrophy.
Taking part in the Hamilton event will be the 2013 Walk Ambassadors, Luisa Fontana and Josie Fortino, who understand the importance of this community event. "My involvement with the walk has helped my family realize that we are not alone in our fight," says Luisa, whose son Aiden was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. "It's a fun event that brings everyone together to support this cause and a great way to meet new people with a common goal," says Josie, Aiden's aunt.
Muscular dystrophy refers to a group of progressive muscle disorders that weaken the muscles that control body movement. These disorders can have devastating effects, resulting in the loss of most abilities we take for granted. Over time, many people with neuromuscular disorders are unable to walk, speak or ultimately breathe. For some, the disorder is fatal.
The Walk for Muscular Dystrophy is "an opportunity for the community to come together and support those affected by neuromuscular disorders at the local level," describes Stacey Lintern, Muscular Dystrophy Canada Ontario Executive Director. This family-friendly, fully inclusive event will include activities for kids, food and refreshments and a prize raffle.
Proceeds from the event support various programs including funding equipment, assistive living devices and support services for individuals and families faced with financial hardships, information and advocacy initiatives, and fund research to one day find a cure. Muscular Dystrophy Canada receives almost no government funding and relies on donor dollars.
The fun will be taking place on Sunday, June 9th at Bayfront Park in Hamilton. Participant registration begins at 10:00 am and the walk, wheel and roll will begin at 11:00 am.
