(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/04/13 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today helped launch the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada's (AJAC) 2013 Eco-Run. During the event, Minister Oliver highlighted green innovations in the automotive sector and the impacts that driving behaviour has on fuel efficiency.

"This year's vehicles demonstrate how innovation is transforming Canada's auto industry - helping Canadians to lower their annual fuel costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said Minister Oliver. "As a result of progressive regulations brought into effect by our Government, by 2025 passenger vehicles and light trucks will emit about half as many greenhouse gas emissions as 2008 models and consume up to 50 percent less fuel, leading to significant savings at the pump."

The Eco-Run showcases twenty-one new model year vehicles in a convoy-style rally from Ottawa to Montreal. The vehicles are driven and evaluated by AJAC automotive journalists who will showcase how fuel-efficient driving habits can help to achieve better fuel consumption. These journalists will also stop in many communities along the route and share their experiences with media and local citizens.

The vehicles chosen for this event demonstrate a broad spectrum of fuel-efficient technologies and choices for Canadians. Vehicles are equipped with gasoline, diesel, hybrid, hybrid plug-in, and battery-electric drive trains to demonstrate the performance of both conventional and advanced vehicle technologies.

The launch event brings together automakers and other industry, government and academic institutions to promote fuel efficiency and demonstrate various energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly technologies that are currently available in personal-use vehicles.

Natural Resources Canada publishes a Fuel Consumption Guide which provides model-specific estimated fuel consumption information on new light-duty vehicles sold in Canada. The information can be used to compare the fuel consumption of different models and help Canadians make informed decisions when purchasing a new vehicle.
