Transfusions in United States are up 140 percent since the 1970s and are now the most frequent procedure for hospitalized patients.
About 5 million people in United States receive blood annually, which is 44 percent higher than Canada and 15 percent higher than Europe per capita.
Each additional unit of blood given raises the risk of complications, including the risk of hospital-acquired infections such as sepsis, longer hospital stays and even death.
Risk of under-diagnosed complications such as transfusion-associated circulatory overload (TACO) and transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) are significantly more common than the risk of contracting HIV during a blood transfusion.
