World’s leading DSL event opens up a global discussion on FTTx and DSL technology

(firmenpresse) - Delft, The Netherlands, 30 May 2013 – Global leaders in DSL innovation are set to gather at TNO’s fifth DSL Seminar, the world’s leading DSL event. Sponsors, speakers and attendees from across the globe have already confirmed attendance, with support growing as the Seminar paves the way for further copper access innovation.

The global support across Europe, US and Asia dedicated to discovering the potential in innovative new ways with ‘traditional copper’ includes a roster of sponsors and speakers, from Asian giant Huawei, to US manufacturer Telebyte; and new participants are still being welcomed. Already significant advancements in the field have taken the industry by storm, namely the research around G.fast, which allows hybrid copper/fibre to deliver Gigabit speeds to the home without the need for laying new cabling the whole way.

To deliver fourth generation broadband services (4GBB) to the masses, the increasing use of fibre will be inevitable for transporting hundreds of Mb/s ever closer to end-users. This does not necessarily mean that fibre needs to be deployed all the way to a point inside the home. An interesting option is bringing fibre up to the home and re-using existing telephony wiring for bridging the last 20-200m, saving on installation costs and time. This type of deployment means that DSL can provide the final link to make FTTH viable. Hybrid fibre copper connectivity with G.fast may in some cases be the more attractive proposition from a business point of view.

The DSL Seminar boasts an impressive line-up of speakers and topics. Day One, which focuses on policy and regulation, will have speakers from WIK-Consult, BNetzA, RTR, Comreg, EWE, Reggefiber and Point Topic, all with a valuable and insightful opinion on the regulation of FTTx and DSL technology. The European focused speakers will be addressing, amongst other topics, the way their work translates to the ongoing development of the EU Digital Agenda remaining committed to achieving the most out of current digital technologies. This will be highlighted by closer examination of what is currently happening in Germany, where Deutsche Telekom is building a vectored VDSL2 network and partnering with several alternative operators to deliver their services. With an incumbent, regulator and alternative operator presenting, the German case is sure to be approached and discussed from many different angles. This will be rounded off with a global opinion delivered by the Broadband Forum, whose CEO, Robin Mersh and President, Kevin Foster, are both chairing the event. All of these presentations create a distinctive space designed to place industry peers in an environment where they can each learn and grow from one another.

Serge Eiffes, Head of Access Networks at EPT Luxembourg, said: “TNO’s DSL Seminar is a unique event which promotes the development of a true community of experts. We hope our contribution detailing exciting new developments in DSL technologies can inspire many other industry experts and mean they can get further benefit from existing assets and networks.”

It is TNO’s mission to connect people and knowledge to create innovations that boost the sustainable competitive strength of the industry. To further encourage the networking nature of the seminar, TNO has organised a social event, introducing attendees to the highlights of the seminar’s backdrop, Scheveningen. This event gives operators, vendors and regulators the opportunity to interact in a less formal and more relaxed setting.

Dr.Gopi Kurup, CEO of Telekom Malaysia Research & Development, commented: “The copper infrastructure and profile from the Asian region provide different technology challenges, and the TNO DSL Seminar is an ideal platform for us to learn and share. We are anticipating vibrant discussion and debates on new DSL technologies at the event.”
