Debby Carreau, CEO of Inspired HR, through her role as a board member of Young Presidents' Organization Women's International Network is partnering with Sheryl Sandberg to help launch Lean In, whose mission is to create a community dedicated to encouraging all women to "lean in to their ambitions". Lean In offers practical, ongoing support through an active online community, education content focused on the skills women need to succeed, and small local peer groups called Lean In Circles.
The objective of Lean In is to address the stalled percentage of women in business leadership roles in the past 10 years. As a woman who has beaten the odds in business Carreau is stepping up to help Canadians Lean In through forming Lean In circles in Calgary, Toronto and other Canadian cities. After just returning from supporting the inaugural Lean In Circle launch with Sheryl Sandberg in San Francisco where 4000 business and professional women attended, Debby Carreau is excited to bring the initiative to Canada.
"We are leaning in because women play a critical role enhancing business performance through providing a diverse perspective and unique skills. Sponsoring and mentoring women is critical for helping businesses leverage all of the talent they need to compete on a global level which includes men and women. Diversity is not about counting heads, it is about making every head count," says Carreau.
Lean In, through its founding research partner, Stanford University, has developed curriculum and programing for the monthly meetings. Circles will be established within organizations looking to provide tools to their emerging female leaders, and for individuals and groups interested in joining circles outside of their workplace.
"Lean In" is a call to action and a toolbox to make it easier for women to become leaders. It's a call for women to take space at the table, raise their hands, speak up and step up. The first Lean In event is scheduled for June 12th 2013 in Calgary.
