ID: 1230765

In an interview with Thomas Kruse, Airframe R&T AIRBUS Operations GmbH (Hamburg), about actual technology development and researches on composite bonded joints

(PresseBox) - Airbus is the world?s leading aircraft manufacturer whose customer focus, commercial know-how, technological leadership and manufacturing efficiency have propelled it to the forefront of the industry. The CFK-Valley Stade Convention Organizers talked to Thomas Kruse about latest Research and Technology activities within AIRBUS Operations GmbH in Germany. Background: Thomas Kruse is workpackage leader for next generation composite joining technologies at AIRBUS Operations GmbH. Kruse is one of overall 30 top-notch speakers at the 7th International CFK-Valley Stade Convention, 11-12 June in Stade. His lecture is focused on: ?Bonding of CFRP primary Aerospace structures: Boundary conditions for certification based on new design and technology approaches?. In the talk with CFK-Valley Convention GbR, Kruse gave an insight in his presentation, to be held at the CFK-Valley Convention on 12 June:
?Today the application of secondary bonding technology for primary aircraft composite structures is limited due to the actual certification boundary conditions. State of the art is the additional need for fasteners within the bonded joint to ensure its integrity which is limiting the benefits of the application of composite bonded joints.? Kruse said. ?My presentation will give an overview on the actual Research within the context of bonded CFRP Primary structures in future generations of Airbus Aircrafts to minimize or even eliminate additional needed Rivets within the bondline.
Beginning with the boundary conditions and the background of the certification regulations the actual framework for the development of composite bonded joints will be presented. This will include the experiences within the aerospace industry as well as the physical principles that are leading to potential initial damages within the bondline. Also the role and interaction of different technology streams like surface preparation, process safety, material & adhesive development and design & sizing approaches to enable a secured long term roadmap to certification of secondary bonded joints will be discussed.

The resulting needs for actual and future technology development and the interaction of new capabilities within the different disciplines the will be highlighted and solution approaches and combinations to build a roadmap to certification of CFRP-bonded joints will be shown.? Kruse added: ?At the end a summary of the latest R&T activities within Airbus on composite bonded joints and supporting technologies will be presented. This will mainly cover results from actual technology development ongoing in the Airbus R&T-program for composite joints and also the research ongoing within the EU-Project BOPACS. Also the opportunity for the academics on individual open fields for research will be addressed.?
Thomas Kruse is Dipl. Ing. Aerospace Engineering, M.Sc. Composites, at AIRBUS Operation GmbH in Hamburg. Rivetless joining technologies and certification approaches for composite structures are in the focus of his current main field activities. Kruse?s lecture will be heard on 12 June at the CFK-Valley Stade Convention in Stade (Germany).
