Legion Supports Aboriginal Awareness Week

ID: 1230636

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/24/13 -- Mr. Gordon Moore, Dominion President of The Royal Canadian Legion, acknowledged Aboriginal Awareness Week as well as the many Aboriginal cultures in Canada, including First Nations, the Inuit and the Metis earlier today at Dominion Command.

"This week, designed to honour the Canadian Mosaic is a welcomed part of our Canadian Heritage," says Gordon Moore. "We are pleased not only to acknowledge but also participate in this event and recognize many Aboriginals who served and continue to do so in the Canadian Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police," adds Moore.

First Nations, the Inuit and the Metis have a proud military history. In the early days of the Legion, many Aboriginal Veterans were some of the first members, playing a key role in the direction the Legion would take in support of all Veterans. Today, many Aboriginals are members of the Legion where they are engaged in shaping the future of Canada's largest Veterans' organization.

The Legion participated in the AAW by having a kiosk at the Cartier Drill Hall, Ottawa on Friday 24 May 2013. Representing the Legion was 5th generation Metis member Bruce Poulin, also a member of the Aboriginal Veterans Autochtones (AVA). This event is part of a larger Aboriginal Affairs Secretariat (AAS) initiative, in conjunction with Parks Canada, the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces to recognize Aboriginals in the public service - including military and RCMP service.

This year, the Legion honoured all Aboriginal Veterans with special commemorative products. These are still available to our Legion members through our online store at .

About the Legion

Established in 1926, the Legion is the largest Veterans service organization in Canada with more than 320,000 members. Its mission is to serve all Veterans including serving Canadian Forces and Royal Canadian Mounted Police members and their families, to promote Remembrance and to serve our communities and our country.

The Legion's Service Bureau Network provides assistance and representation to all Veterans including serving CF and RCMP members, and their families regarding their disability claims, benefits and services from Veterans Affairs Canada and the Veterans Review and Appeal Board. In communities across Canada, it is the Legion that perpetuates Remembrance through the Poppy Campaign and Remembrance Day ceremonies. With more than 1,450 branches, The Legion supports programs for seniors, Veterans housing, Long Term Care, youth leadership, education, sports, Cadets, Guides and Scouts.
