(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwired) -- 05/21/13 -- There's no substitute for experience when it comes to recent college graduates finding a place in the workforce.

According to a prominent professor, sales provide perhaps the strongest background that can lead to success in virtually any field. Why? Because, he says, "We're all selling something all the time."

Mike Williams, an associate dean and marketing professor at the Meinders School of Business at Oklahoma City University, recently addressed hundreds of young entrepreneurs at a banquet honoring sales representatives and managers of Vector Marking, the direct sales division for , the largest kitchen cutlery manufacturer in North America. The 64-year-old company sells its products through a national network of college students who sell through in-home personal demonstrations.

"This is not just about knives," said Williams. "Knives are just the vehicle leading you down a path of . Because in the course of your experience here you have learned valuable skills and traits -- critical thinking, self confidence, empathy, organization, communications, and enthusiasm."

Williams pointed out that this experience is valued in today's workplace -- whether these young entrepreneurs stay with Vector after graduation or move on to other careers.

"The proof is in the numbers," he said. "The national placement average for recent graduates is about 45 percent. But the average for is approximately 95 percent because this company provides a path for professional growth. And, recruiting managers recognize the advantages of hiring you -- young people with significant sales experience.

"Today's corporations seek young people with entrepreneurial attitudes," added Williams. "The Vector background jumps off the pages of resumes, pretty much guaranteeing an interview and a good chance at employment."

While these professionals gain significant capabilities, they also develop "soft" skills.

"When I meet a , they make eye contact, they are confident, they communicate effectively," he said. "These young entrepreneurs stand out as leaders with life experiences. They have gained significant professional and life experiences at a young age."

One other key advantage noted by Williams is that upon graduation, Vector sales professionals have career choices, options that many of their contemporaries don't have.

"These students have spent significant time pursuing a career while in college and along the way have earned significant incomes while developing skills that are usually associated with much older people," he said. "Many decide to carve out a career with Vector while others can move on to other entrepreneurial endeavors."

Cutco Cutlery is a 64-year-old company with headquarters and manufacturing facilities in Olean, New York.
