Mining Industry Creating Jobs and Growth in Western Canada

ID: 1228216

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/16/13 -- Today, in support of National Mining Week, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification highlighted Western Canada's contribution to the Canadian economy through the mining sector, and the investments by the Harper Government to help strengthen this growing industry.

"This week recognizes the importance of the mining industry to the Canadian economy," said Minister Yelich. "As home to the world's leading cluster of mining companies, and among the world's top producers of minerals such as uranium and potash, Western Canada is a leader in mining and mineral exploration."

With over 20,000 western Canadians currently working in the mining sector and an estimated $500-billion worth of new energy and mining projects expected in Canada over the next ten years, there are countless opportunities for the West to take advantage of this important sector.

In the past year, the Harper Government has invested over $2 million for projects in the mining sector across Western Canada. Projects have included support for the College of the Rockies to acquire haul-truck simulators to train entry-level workers in the coal mining sector, as well as improving the Saskatchewan Research Council's mineral processing pilot plant's capacity to handle rare earth minerals.

Every year starting the second Monday of May, Canadians celebrate National Mining Week to recognize the importance of the Canadian mining industry to the economic development of Canada. To learn more about National Mining Week, visit Natural Resources Canada's website at:
