(firmenpresse) - CORNWALLIS, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/14/13 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, along with Mr. Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, today announced the awarding of a contract valued at approximately $11 million to the Annapolis Basin Conference Centre of Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, to provide the facilities and services required to operate Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Acadia, the largest Sea Cadet Summer Training Centre in Canada, for nine weeks over the next three summers and provide year-round storage facilities.

Important government investments in the Cadet Program not only ensure cadets continue to have the best possible support for their training, they're helping sustain employment for Canadians, and stimulating the economy in Nova Scotian communities. This contract is valued at approximately $11 million for three summers and, with the storage facilities, will remain in effect until March 31, 2016. It is estimated that this contract will sustain 100 jobs in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, to support HMCS Acadia.

"Cadets develop valuable life skills in teamwork, citizenship, leadership and physical fitness, while having fun and meeting new friends," said Minister MacKay. "Our government is ensuring that the cadets of HMCS Acadia have the best possible support for their training, demonstrating our commitment to a well-rounded and bright future for young Canadians."

Cadets from across the country take part in music, sailing, drill and ceremonial, sports and fitness, air rifle marksmanship, and seamanship programs at the training centre each summer.

"Today's announcement demonstrates our continued support of the Cadet Program and skilled Canadian workers - including right here in the Atlantic region," said Mr. Kerr. "I'm pleased to see continued important investments in the Cornwallis area."

The Annapolis Basin Conference Centre will provide the various facilities and services needed to conduct cadet training at HMCS Acadia, including but not limited to: offices, storage, a medical clinic, a theatre, classrooms, and training facilities as well as accommodations, food, transportation, janitorial, and laundry/dry cleaning services. Some of the training during the summer may take place off-site, and there may be optional spring and fall training weekends.

The Government of Canada conducted an open, fair, and transparent competition process to award this contract.
