(firmenpresse) - 14 WING GREENWOOD, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/14/13 -- Today, the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, along with Mr. Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, officially inaugurated the William Hall VC Building, the new Health Services Centre at 14 Wing Greenwood.

"This investment demonstrates our Government's commitment to provide members of the Canadian Armed Forces with the services they need to remain healthy and rehabilitated," said Minister MacKay. "Ensuring the health and safety of our personnel is our priority, and this new health care facility will help provide the care required."

The Health Services Centre project involved the construction of a two-storey, 4473 m2 facility that will significantly improve the standard of health care provided to the community at 14 Wing Greenwood. The new centre will provide direct, comprehensive mental health services, medical, and dental care to the Wing population, including space for a cadet walk-in clinic.

"I am proud that this new health facility will bear the name of William Hall, the first Nova Scotian and first Black man to ever receive the Victoria Cross," said MP Kerr. "This will help ensure that all people passing through this new health centre can recognize Mr. Hall's accomplishment and his dedication to his country."

"Medical personnel at 14 Wing make a tremendous contribution to our operations by ensuring our members are well cared for, and remain mentally and physically strong so they can continue to be operationally focused and enthusiastic about the work they do, thanks to their professionalism and dedication," said Colonel Jim Irvine, Wing Commander.

This project's overall value is estimated at $25.4 million, which includes all aspects of the project, such as studies, design, construction, administration, contingencies and taxes. As part of this project, a $15.1 million construction contract was awarded to Pomerleau Inc. of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, which helped generate 82 jobs in the community throughout the duration of this project.

In line with the Canada First Defence Strategy, there is a need to update and replace dated defence infrastructure to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The Government's significant investments in defence infrastructure provide economic benefits to communities across Canada.
