The Digital Athlete: Social Media and Sports

In the new digital landscape of communications many athletes, coaches and teams want to capitalize on possibilities and develop their brands for success. Sports fans consume brands and sports in a whole new way with unlimited and measurable rewards. Anyone involved in the sports industry needs to learn how to develop and curate a communications and media strategy to deal with the complexities of changing technologies. We'll show you why athletes need to create a brand and get involved in social media as part of an integrated communications strategy.

Jan Hudec will be speaking about his personal experience with branding and social media, followed by a SMBYYC first: A scavenger hunt in Canada's Sports Hall of Fame featuring prizes from our fabulous sponsors!

Post discussion, audience questions will be answered in an interactive Q&A.

About the Guest Speakers:

Janet Doyle

Janet Doyle holds a BA in Kinesiology and Law & Society from York University and a Diploma in Business Management from Humber College. Her professional experience includes roles at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment hosting NBA, NHL, NLL, and MLS events including the FIFA U20 World Cup. She has managed social media campaigns for Redpath Sugar, Help Conquer Cancer, and the Lake Louise Ski Area. Currently she is a freelance marketer specializing in corporate partnerships and engagement with an interest in sponsorship activation and athlete branding.

Cara Azevedo

Cara Azevedo has had some extraordinary opportunities to research, design and implement everything from new technologies to new business models over the last couple of decades. Each time, she has engaged fully and enjoyed the privilege of watching her imagination, innovation and integration positively impact the projects she manages. For the past 20 years, she has been continuously involved with media at various levels - working with and creating companies such as Visionworks, 3DB and OnLineLiveTV. Cara was recently nominated for the Canadian WebBlog Awards in the areas of Pop Culture and Entertainment among other categories for her success as a writer. Currently, Cara is the lead strategist at Carazcom. Some of Cara's most recent projects include Media Management with the National Film Board of Canada, Guest Speaker at Edmonton International Film Fest and is currently managing a Political Campaign.

Jan Hudec

Jan Hudec is a professional ski racer with Alpine Canada and 2010 Olympian. Committed to skiing, Canada and his team, in 2011 Jan was in the humble position of having to ask for help to continue his racing career. His community rallied around him and after raising the funds necessary to continue racing, he went on to lead his team in points and World Ranking in two disciplines. In 2012 Jan founded the pandaHAUS with a vision to support fellow athletes and "change the way we succeed".
