Before 2nd June 2013, art enthusiasts are able to visit the British Museum to see a unique exhibition of 'Ice Age Art', 40,000 years in the making!

This groundbreaking show displays masterpieces from the last Ice Age, collected from across Europe. The British Museum has described one of the main themes behind the exhibition as 'the fundamental human desire to communicate and make art as a way of understanding ourselves and our place in the world.' For this reason, the world's oldest sculptures, drawings and portraits are on show, alongside modern works from Henry Moore, Mondrian and Matisse.
The Ice Age art consists of natural materials, including mammoth ivory and reindeer antler and demonstrates both skill and imagination, despite being created thousands of years ago. A centre piece of the show is a 23,000 year old abstract figure from Lespugue, which is said to have fascinated Picasso and influenced some of his sculptures during the 1930s. The exhibition demonstrates that despite the many thousands of years that separate some of the pieces, creativity has remained similar.
The Times suggested that this is an 'exhibition that everyone should see' and The Guardian commented that 'not even Leonardo surpassed this'.
