(firmenpresse) - MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 05/10/13 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, announced today three investments to improve military infrastructure in Quebec.

"The safety and well-being of our troops and the civilian personnel serving on our bases and wings throughout Canada are of primary importance," said Minister MacKay. "Our government is keeping its commitment to ensure that the necessary infrastructure, equipment and resources are in place so that our Canadian Army can carry out the important missions assigned to it. Our investments are following through on that commitment once again."

Minister MacKay announced that the Government of Canada has awarded a $826,000 contract for urgent repairs to the wooden structure of Building H-103, at the St-Jean Garrison. H-103 houses the St-Jean Garrison clothing stores, which serves the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, a unit of the Canadian Defence Academy.

Minister Mackay also announced two infrastructure improvement projects at the Citadelle of Quebec. A $2,078,000 investment will be used to rebuild the wall of Mann's Bastion, so as to extend its life span, preserve its heritage character, and ensure the safety of the pedestrians who use the Promenade des gouverneurs, which runs along the Citadelle to the Dufferin Terrace. The Government of Canada has also invested $1,065,000 to replace a boiler at the Citadelle of Quebec.

The Citadelle of Quebec is the largest British fortress built in North America. Located within the fortifications of Old Quebec, it was built on Cape Diamant, the highest natural point in Quebec City. As such, it overlooks the city. Its defensive role and geographic location have earned it the nickname of "the Gibraltar of America."
