Growing, Growing, Gone: Government Continues to Plough Through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 05/09/13 -- Some 350 Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) employees represented by the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) received Workforce Adjustment (WFA) notices today across the country, bringing to nearly 6,000 the number of PIPSC members who have been informed by the government that their services may no longer be required since the tabling of the 2012 federal Budget. The government had previously targeted AAFC in 2012, when over 150 PIPSC members had received similar notices. This previous round of "no-impact" cuts had notably led to the closure of Canada's highly-respected Cereal Research Centre in Winnipeg.
Today's cuts at AAFC are principally concentrated in the Science and Technology and Market and Industry Services branches. Affected employees include 144 Commerce Officers, 79 Scientists, 76 IT Specialists, 29 Engineers, 14 Biologists, 5 Research Managers and 3 Procurement Officers. Geographically, 154 are located in the National Capital Region (NCR), 49 in Saskatchewan, 33 in Manitoba, 26 in Quebec, 22 in British Columbia, 21 in Alberta, 19 in Ontario (other than in the NCR), 13 in Nova Scotia, 8 in New Brunswick, 3 in Prince Edward island and 2 In Newfoundland.
These high-value employees are involved in the development of crop management strategies, in minimizing the impact of the agricultural industry on the environment, in supporting the sustainability and the profitability of the agricultural sector, in making market data easily available to producers and in supporting Canadian exports across the glob.
