Newborn Screening Leaders Honored by APHL

The following awards were given:
This year's recipient is Dr. Phillip Ferrell from the . Dr. Ferrell's work has centered primarily on cystic fibrosis research as well as racial infant mortality. His commitment to cystic fibrosis (CF) screening was demonstrated by his pioneering and promoting a two-tiered mutation screening process that has led to improvements in CF testing. Dr. Ferrell has also worked with to develop guidance on the management and treatment of newborns diagnosed with CF.
This year's recipient is Dr. Anne Marie Comeau of the . Dr. Comeau is highly recognized by her colleagues for her significant role in the advancement of newborn screening testing nationwide. Her tireless efforts with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) detection research played an integral role in the endorsement of this screen by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary's Advisory Committee for Heritable Disorders in Children and Newborns for inclusion into the recommended newborn screening panel.
- This year's recipient is Dr. Rodney Howell. Dr. Howell may be most recognized for his role as chair of the Congressionally-mandated HHS . His leadership was pivotal in the addition of many genetic and metabolic conditions to the core panel. "This remarkable man has been inspirational to all in the field," said Scott Becker, executive director of the Association of Public Health Laboratories.
